Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest School is unique educational experience and process that offers children the opportunity to succeed and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment. Children engage in motivating and achievable tasks and activities throughout the year and in almost all weathers. Children will work with tools, play, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, grow in confidence, self-esteem and motivation whilst developing an understanding of the natural world.

Some activities at our Forest School include;

  • Shelter building
  • Fire lighting
  • Tool use
  • Studying wildlife
  • Playing team and group games
  • Sensory activities
  • Tracking games
  • Cooking on an open fire
  • Using a Kelly Kettle
  • Rope and string work
  • Art and sculpture work
  • Woodland and traditional craft
  • Developing stories and drama, and meeting imaginary characters
  • Physical movement activities

Mrs Armstrong is training as our Forest School Leader.

Week 1
For out first week of forest school, we were super busy getting to know our environment, playing lots of games and creating some forest school stick men. We all had a great time despite some nettle stings! We now know to try to avoid these even if its a really good place to hide or build!
Week 2
Shelters this week! The children decided to make a boys shelter and a girls shelter. It was very interesting to see the team dynamics and there was certainly a bit of competition going on by the end of the sessions. At least our shelters kept us dry from the rain!
Week 3
Shelters for Year 1s this week. The weather was quite different - a lot less rain, but a lot more wind... this made shelter building quite tricky sometimes!
Week 4
We managed to do our 30 Days Wild activity and Forest School at the same time today! We played lots of games and made some fantastic 'wild' mobiles. Lots of fiddly knots and concentration today.
Week 5
Another rainy week! What has happened to summer? However, the rain made some fantastic puddles to explore and enjoy, so it was a very fun and wet Forest School this week. Can water splash over wellies? Yes. Yes it can! Well done Year 1s - a great session!
